Too small…

From Prime Time last week…

This is what’s so radically different about Christianity and why it’s so hard for Brown students to understand.

Jesus Christ is our hope, the object of our faith. He’s the leader we follow, the example we emulate. He’s the Captain, he’s the MVP.

Not you.

By placing your faith in the person, works, and words of Jesus—rather than yourself, your accomplishments, your good morals—you are then part of God’s family.

You’re now free to fail and flounder because you’re already in the family, you’ve made the team because you accepted Jesus’ offer. Now it’s time to get to work, no doubt.

Just like when you came to Brown to play sports. But unlike sports, you don’t get cut from God’s squad. He’s going to push you and mold you and it’s going to hurt—but it’ll be worth it and because He loves you and wants the best for you.

In fact, even a world-renowned expert on performance, Steve Magness, recognizes that in order to attain and sustain peak performance, one has to not be defined by their success or failure. Athletes need to ‘let go’ of getting value from their sport in order to achieve maximum performance..

Friends, that’s just a secular attempt at a spiritual reality, namely: we were designed by our good Creator God to perform and excel out of or in response to His love and acceptance of us. Not as a way to earn God’s love and acceptance or value.

For the Christian, it’s an acceptance-based performance, not a performance-based acceptance. We’ll unpack more of that throughout the year.

So, let me summarize and circle back: you’re not just a bunch of molecules mashed together. You are that. But you’re so much more than that.

The science and society and standpoints that are subtly squeezed on you are TOO SMALL for you.

And this is what we discuss and discover together at Athletes In Action, applying this faith freedom to our sport in the context of the Ivy League.

We hope you join us on this journey.
