How to Survive a Cultural Crisis by Mark Dever

Public opinion appears to be changing about same-sex marriage, as are the nation’s laws. Of course this change is just one in a larger constellation. America’s views on family, love, sexuality generally, tolerance, God, and so much more seems to be pushing in directions that put Bible-believing Christians on the defensive.

It’s easy to feel like we’ve become the new “moral outlaws,” to use Al Mohler’s phrase. Standing up for historic Christian principles will increasingly get you in trouble socially and maybe economically, perhaps one day also criminally. It’s ironic that Christians are told not to impose their views on others, even as the threat of job loss or other penalties loom over Christians for not toeing the new party line.

In all this, Christians are tempted to become panicked or to speak as alarmists. But to the extent we do, to that same extent we show we’ve embraced an unbiblical and nominal Christianity.

Here, then, are seven principles for surviving the very real cultural shifts we’re presently enduring.

Read the rest here.

“Just about every Christian has memorized the closing verses of Galatians and Paul’s description of the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. This is the character of the man or woman who has been justified by grace through faith.

Yet as we review the list, and especially as we review it slowly and prayerfully, we may find ourselves growing weary and discouraged by how little of that fruit we see. We are still angry at times, still struggling with self-control, still not nearly as gentle as Jesus Christ was and is.

Paul’s metaphor of the “fruit” of the Spirit can help us, though. Here are five things that are true of fruit trees and, therefore, true of the fruit of the Spirit….”

What up AIA-Brown?!
Just because the school year is over, it doesn’t mean your spiritual development has to stop–in fact, this summer could be a great time for you to further investigate Christianity and the person, works, and words of Jesus Christ, or perhaps to work on some spiritual disciplines to grow closer to God, or perhaps just to read large chunks of the Bible now that you have some more time. Whatever it is, go for it! And invite others to join you.

Also, here are few things for you to check out heading into summer:

Cru Doctrine – an interactive tool to give you an introduction to systematic theology while seeking to engage your heart to worship Christ and engage in ministry.

Knowing God Better: A summer study guide through the Gospel of John. It’s an email series, delivered to your inbox. Each email gives you sections straight from the Gospel of John, and a few comments about the history or culture, to help you.

How to Grow as a Christian – another great online 5-course curriculum to help “build true spirituality”

Bible — great resources for levels of maturity

Dating and Relationships — some of the best, most relevant resources for college students

Sex…lust…and pornography — sadly, we’ve all encountered these in one way or another. Check out these awesome resources to get educated and equipped and encouraged.

Tons more great stuff on the AIA Resources webpage.

Oh, and did you know that there are still a few spots for the Ultimate Training Camp: Week 2…?! There’s still time! Just go for it. Let us know if you have any questions and/or want help getting funds together.

Finally, will you be in/near Providence this summer? Reply to this email to let us know! We’ll keep AIA going all summer long–movie nights, cookouts, discussion groups, and who knows what else…

In God We Hope…For God We Play

AIA-Brown

P.S. — BONUS! Our campus director, Jarrod, will be captaining an ultimate frisbee team for the Rhode Island summer league–and he’d love to have you on this team! However, you need to sign up ASAP because the draft–yes, there’s an actual draft–is next week. Don’t worry, all levels are welcome, so there will be plenty of people that are new to ultimate. Let Jarrod know if you’re interested. Games are Monday/Wednesdays at 6pm.

The main focus will be on an educational enrichment program to teach essential skills to learners from the township high schools in order to empower youth as members of the community so that they can gain admittance to University and create powerful change in their community.
I was just told that Wildwood has only had 3 male applicants thus far. It is creating a bottleneck where the leadership are having to put women applicants and student staff on hold until more men are accepted.

Dave, Aaron and the staff there in past years have done a great job creating a experience where students share their faith in a variety of ways, and especially in teams. This experience is critical in seeing a faithful, ongoing witness back on campus and after graduation in students’ natural spheres of influence.

The “grief” cycle is where we strive for achievement through activities and then gain our identity in those actions, which further drives us to do more to gain more acceptance, leading to more striving to achieve to bolster our self-confidence and improve our identity. This cycle works for a while (or not), but it fails and falls short of God’s abundant life.

Instead, we need to get on the “grace” cycle, where we’re already accepted by God through faith in the person, works, and words of Jesus Christ. God gives us our sustenance and satisfaction in Him, which leads to a solid, unshakable identity with Christ (sons of God), leading to achievements and actions (fruitfulness) that are actually God-glorifying (and not self-glorifying).
