From Grief to Glory

AIA Staff Aaron Fears walked us through John 11:1-44 to talk about God’s presence, power, and purpose in life’s defeats, disappointments, and even death. He reminded us that…

  • Jesus loves us, even though He may not answer our prayers right away or according to how we want. God is not deaf or dumb; His plans and purposes are bigger and better.

  • In fact, God may sometimes use suffering to make Himself known and to display his distinctness from and superiority over all others.

  • We can be honest with God in our grief (just like Mary and Martha) and we can ask questions—but do so while still being respectful.

  • Jesus feels with us in our pain and disappointment and loss.

  • Our grief ends in glory. The stories of the Bible follow its metanarrative of suffering to glory, death to life, separation to oneness.

“Trust God at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” (Psalm 62:8)
