Mental Toughness

Endurance is more than just physical.

At the collegiate level and beyond, we know that mental toughness is often the difference between victory and defeat, between greatness and mediocrity. Even the G.O.A.T.s agree—see here and here.

But how do we strengthen our mental muscles? Is there a better way than merely gutting it out…? As AIA Northeast Regional Director John Vampatella unpacked last Wednesday at Prime Time, there is indeed a better way…

Contrasting the two cities in Isaiah 26, John shared that the strong, righteous, faithful, peaceful city is full of people who have their minds stayed on God because they trust the Rock, their sure and everlasting Lord.

The other city is proud, self-sufficient, and looks down on others in order to feel good about themselves. How often this can reflect our beliefs and behavior!

And so one key way to grow in mental toughness is to daily choose to trust in the Lord. This is not referring to salvation itself (Ephesians 2), but to the “working out” of your salvation (Philippians 2:12).

We’re called to “set our minds on things that are above” (Colossians 3:1-3) and seek first the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 6:33)

God is everlasting which means the source of His strength—from which we draw—is limitless…leading to extraordinary endurance.
